GRADING

As is normal business practice here in the Brazilian timber industry, only the very best in timber quality is exported from its shores. The second grade quality is usually only used in the local market however we occasionally entertain requests from our clients for this second grade wood since it is significantly cheaper that first grade quality timber. In effect then, we do offer different grades of timber. The usual determinants of timber grading include the price limit, the end use of the timber and also the availability of the timber.

Almost all the timber we supply is timber that has been carefully chosen for export only. The timber is all of first quality with the only difference being the classification. When the buyer demands that the wood be without any defect (for all the sizes) I.e. what is known in the industry as a ‘perfect wood’, the price is of course higher since is rare to find a wood completely free of any defect.

We normally grade and sell the wood according to the following standards:

• Wood for floors is in a standard single size.  It is free of any defect on the top side of the wood since this is the side that will be seen. The reverse side of the wood would have a few small defects since this side of the wood would be invisible.

• Wood for doors and furniture are crude, sawed and dried in a stove. This type of wood doesn’t have any defect. They are just sometime a little more clear.

There are times when wood grading is highly scrutinised since the grading of wood is very subjective. What one company or even country sees as average grading, may on occasions be seen as slightly less than average grading.

In rare occasions, it is not uncommon for the buyer to ask for an inspection of the shipment grading by an independent inspection team prior to shipment. As in the past, we welcome any such request, as we are extremely confident of our quality and grading.
