Lambskin Tanning

 

The following procedures summarize the complete transformation of lambskin pelts from the arrival of the skins at the tannery, right through to the packing of the finished leather at the end.

  1.  Arrival  - The (already flayed) picked pelts at the tannery

  2. Degrease - To remove fat (using paraffin/detergent system) from the pelts

  3. Tan - To increase the resistance to putrefaction

  4. Sam – To squeeze out the water

  5. Set Out -To flatten the grain and increase the skin area

  6. Trim – To avoid tangling in the dying vessels

  7. Sort – Using the tanneries individual sorting criteria

  8. Add -Dye & fat liquor for colour and hand feel

  9. Stake – To soften the skin

  10. Shave – To the clients specifications

  11. Dry drum -To further soften the skin

  12. Finish -To give the final ‘hand’.

  13. Grade – E.g. in a TR selection

  14. Packing -Ready for dispatch
